A new outdoor centre is expected to be up and running in Caithness this summer - 20 years after the project was first proposed.

Local charity Rumster Outdoors is finalising plans for the £100,000 building that would provide shelter, electricity and a classroom for youth groups in a forest near Latheron.

The site was previously home to a popular outdoor centre that closed in the late 1990s and burnt down in 2006.

Rumster Outdoors said it hoped the new facilities would encourage a wide range of organisations to use the area for weekend camping trips and day activities.

Difficulties with funding and planning, and then the Covid pandemic, delayed the scheme.

Work is expected to start on the site soon.

Rumster Outdoor Centre management group chairman, Willie Marshall, said there was a "huge desire" for a base which could be used for day visits and promote physical health and mental health.
