Bakery to shut after four decades in town centre

Chatwins will close its Newcastle-under-Lyme store on Saturday

A high street bakery in Staffordshire is closing after more than 40 years, its owners have announced.

Chatwins, at 34 High Street in Newcastle-under-Lyme, will shut for the final time on Saturday.

Bosses at the firm blamed falling footfall and rising costs, and said the decision had not been made lightly.

Nearby stores – including those in Alsager, Crewe and Sandbach – would continue trading, they said.

"After more than 40 wonderful years serving the people of Newcastle, we are saddened to announce that our shop will be closing," said managing director Edward Chatwin.

"We have many fond memories of our time in Newcastle and would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all our customers and staff who have made it a privilege to be part of such a vibrant community.

"Should the right location become available in the future, Newcastle is certainly a place we would love to return to."

Mr Chatwin said staff from its Newcastle branch had been offered roles at the firm's other locations.
