A delivery driver described as a "legend" and "one in a million" has been given a surprise present from his customers.

Shamshair Singh Uppal, known as Sham, works for DPD and has delivered around Woodstock for seven years.

The surprise came after more than 700 people liked a post on a local Facebook group, external describing him as "courier of the year 2024".

At the company's depot in Bicester, Sham was presented with a thank you card by BBC Radio Oxford's Sophie Law, signed by residents Sham has delivered to over the years.

Among the nearly 300 comments on the post was a mention of Sham's acts of kindness, including when he "jumped" out of his van to help a customer scrape ice off their car.

Another comment read: "When your delivery driver hugs you when you've been made redundant... you know you've been Sham'd."

One of the messages in the card read: "Thank you for being the best, always with a smile."

Paul Daily, manager at DPD's Bicester depot, said: "Even in the morning, he's always laughing and smiling.

"Sometimes you get some bad news about drivers, but when someone like Sham does an amazing job, it's just fantastic."

Reacting to his card, Sham said he was "shocked" and "overwhelmed".

"It's all because of the people I deliver to," he added. "They're so nice as well."

Asked whether he was looking forward to another seven years, he joked: "They're meant to give me a new contract this week.

"I'm still waiting for it to sign."
