A Surrey fish and chip shop owner said he was "super chuffed" for his business to be named amongst the 50 best in the UK.

Oysters in Guildford Road, Lightwater, has been named one of Fry Magazine's top 50 fish and chip shops in the country after mystery shoppers assessed the take-away.

Gav Singh, who has owned Oysters for 14 years, said the award "puts us on the map" in a "very tough industry" hit by rising food and energy prices.

The shop scooped the award as the best in Surrey and is one of two top-rated fish and chip shops in the South East.

Churchill's Fish and Chip Shop in Langney near Eastbourne, East Sussex also made it into the top 50.

Mr Singh told BBC Radio Surrey: "I'm super chuffed, it's been one of the best starts to the year.

"It's a huge accolade and I'm genuinely happy for my staff and their continued hard work in what is a very tough industry at the moment."

"It doesn't get any easier. There is a decline in fish and chip shops and my worry going forward is that people who could be in the business for another four or five years have given up."

Oysters picked up the award after being visited by a mystery shopper who graded the shop on areas including customer interactions, food quality and value for money.

The shop received a 96% score, putting it in the top 50 fish and chip shops in the UK.
