A dead dog was found in rubbish fly-tipped on a country road, a councillor has said.
An Essex Police spokesperson said a deceased dog was found near Mucking Hall Road, Barling, near Southend-on-Sea, at about 09:00 BST on Saturday.
Mike Steptoe, a local Conservative councillor, said the area has since been cleared and the body of the dog - which he said could have been an XL bully - had been taken to a vet.
He added: "From the evidence of the body, I suspect there was some cruelty." The police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
