A 13-year-old boy riding a modified bicycle at speeds of up to 45mph was arrested after police made "tactical contact" with the bike.

Traffic officers on patrol in Ratcliffe Street in York came across the vehicle operated with a throttle rather than pedals, which put it in the motorbike category, on Wednesday afternoon, North Yorkshire Police said.

The rider refused to pull over and the bike was ridden along the 30mph road at speeds of up to 45mph. The "tactical contact" with the bike brought it to a halt, the force said.

A boy was arrested on suspicion of driving with no insurance or licence, failing to stop for police and for riding with no helmet. He has been released under investigation.
