A "garden neighbourhood" of hundreds of new homes could be built in a Leicestershire village.

Developer David Wilson Homes is seeking permission from Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council to build 240 homes on fields off Barlestone Road, to the north of Newbold Verdon.

Land has also been set aside for a new cemetery and for a potential health centre expansion as part of the plan.

If approved, the development will have two plays areas and a community orchard, the Local Democracy Reporting Service, external (LDRS) said.

Planning documents say 40% of the homes will be affordable, while 5% will be bungalows.

In its application, David Wilson Homes says the proposed development will "create housing choice".

Newbold Verdon is already set to be expanded to the south after a 239-home development was given planning permission by a government inspector earlier this year.

The LDRS said more houses had also been built at the Ferrers Green development in the north-west of the village.
