Schools shut and trains cancelled following floods

Heavy rain and 'extreme' flooding have brought problems to parts of Gloucestershire with schools and businesses forced to closed.

An amber weather warning has been issued by the Met Office, with parts of England and Wales braced for heavy rain.

The Environment Agency has also issued two red flood warnings, external in parts of Cheltenham and has warned residents to "expect" flooding.

Five schools across the county were closed on Monday, with businesses and public transport also affected.

Flooding forced a number of schools to close their doors on Monday morning.

Gloucestershire County Council confirmed, external the Chosen Hill School, Hatherley Infant, Sherborne Church of England Primary, Tewkesbury Church of England Primary and The Milestone School had all shut.

Milestone's Headteacher Stephen Dowell said "severe flooding" caused by torrential rain on Friday would keep the school closed on Tuesday.

Heavy rain has also caused disruption for people travelling by train.

Great Western Railway says services between London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads via Bath Spa may be cancelled, delayed or diverted because of flooding.

There were also cancellations on the line between Cheltenham Spa and Ashchurch For Tewkesbury.

Floods also blocked the lines towards Bristol and Cardiff.

Gloucestershire County Council said the Hempstead Recycling Centre in Gloucester was closed, external following flooding and advised people to book appointments at other sites.

A gymnastics club in Gloucester said it would be closed "until further notice" following heavy rain over the weekend.

Checkers in Gloucester posted images , externalof damaged equipment and a flooded hall, following what they described as "extreme flash flooding".

It is asking for donations to help repair the facilities.
