Plans for ski village development announced

Parkwood was home to Sheffield Ski Village until it closed in 2012

An update on plans to regenerate a former ski village in Sheffield are to be announced at a council meeting next week.

Sheffield City Council will hear an update on the plans to redevelop the site at Parkwood following a proposal from New Zealand developer Skyline Lounge.

In 2022, options were presented to the council on how to take forward the plans to develop the site following the ending of the lease with the then-developer.

Skyline made a proposal and discussions continued "with the clear understanding that dealing with the site's access and the condition of the site itself was needed before Skyline would be able to take forward any proposals for the site", according to a report.

The council's transport, regeneration and climate policy committee will hear a kiosk had been constructed and in operation, and "wider improvements to the country park have been made".

The report said: "Discussions with Skyline have also continued. With the funding now in place to improve the site and improve access we are putting in place a memorandum of understanding that will allow Skyline to begin to masterplan the site.

"This will then allow for the council to enter into negotiations for the development of the site/lease of the land."

The Sheffield Ski Village operated from 1988 until it was destroyed by fire in April 2012.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the council received £19.4m for the site from the government's Levelling Up fund. This is to be spent on:

• The creation of a new access road, including improvements to cycle and pedestrian access, and improvements to the public realm

• Enabling work for the development, including the treatment of Japanese knotweed

• Improvements to the country park including mountain bike trails, a new kiosk, new paths and path improvements.
