Non-league club fined over smoke bomb celebration

A non-league football club said it has been fined after fans set off smoke bombs and invaded the pitch after a cup tie.

Daventry Town Football Club said the Northamptonshire FA had issued it with a £960 fine for the scenes which followed its 2-1 win at Highgate United in their FA Vase first round match in the West Midlands on 19 October.

In a statement, the club said FA rule E21 - relating to supporter behaviour - was breached following Daventry's "last-second winning goal and at the full-time whistle".

The club said: "The players love the support and enthusiasm from our younger supporters, and we do not wish for this to stop, however this must be done within the ground regulations".

The FA Vase final takes place at Wembley Stadium in May

The Northamptonshire club, nicknamed the Purple Army, are enjoying their joint-best run in the FA Vase and will reach the quarter-final of the competition for the first time if they win at Erith & Belvedere FC in south-east London on Saturday.
