Motorists have been facing heavy delays after a three-vehicle crash closed a section of busy commuter route.

The collision happened just before 07:00 BST on the A19 in South Tyneside, between Monkton and Testos Roundabout.

North East Ambulance Service said one person was taken to hospital, but Northumbria Police said no serious injuries were reported.

A section of the route was closed southbound, but National Highways has since confirmed the road has reopened.

A police spokesperson earlier advised motorists to expect delays and seek other routes if possible.

The delays of more than an hour came as commuters already faced heavy traffic due to work on the Tyne Bridge and the A167(M) Central Motorway.
