A man in north London has been arrested on suspicion of religiously motivated criminal damage over a series of attacks on synagogues and a nursery, the Metropolitan Police has said.

The 37-year-old was arrested in the Hendon area in connection with seven offences and remains in custody while inquiries continue.

On Thursday the force said that four synagogues and a private residence had a substance smeared on them.

Other incidents, which police described as "revolting and appalling", involved liquid being thrown towards a school and over a car. It is understood the substance and liquid were bodily fluids.

Community security volunteer group Shomrim and The Jewish News both said locations had been targeted with faeces.

Det Ch Supt Luke Williams has said the arrest is "a significant development in our investigation following substantial CCTV enquiries by officers".

He added: "We remain in close contact with the local Jewish community as we continue to provide our support and reassurance."
