Town centre car park extension plan submitted

Kirklees Council wants to increase the number of parking spaces at Cambridge Road

More parking spaces could be created in Huddersfield town centre if council plans get the go ahead.
An application has been submitted to extend the Cambridge Road car park to include an extra 29 more spaces.
Kirklees Council said the town had lost a number of parking spaces in recent years, as some car parks have been closed and others used for construction.
A spokesperson said the extension would create "much needed car parking facilities close to Huddersfield train station, the town centre and ring road".
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), 60 spaces were lost at the Cambridge Road car park in 2024 when the council's fleet vehicles relocated there from Flint Street.
A large part of the site, which is described as Huddersfield's "all-day commuter car park", is now taken up by a new locked compound.
The council said the move had put "significant pressure" on parking provision elsewhere in the town centre and it now wants to extend the site to the south, where the Cambridge Road Nursery was previously located.
A previous extension to the car park was approved in the 90s when the Cambridge Road Baths was demolished.
The entire plot of land had been allocated for housing under the council's Local Plan, but the local authority said there had been no interest from developers.
Should this change in the future, the council said an extension would not prejudice any future residential development.
