A murder investigation has been launched after a man was shot dead in Sheffield.

Emergency services were called to Watery Street, near the junction with St Philip's Road, in the city's Upperthorpe area, just after 22:00 BST on Tuesday.

A 32-year-old man was taken to hospital where he later died, South Yorkshire Police said. His family is being supported by officers.

Det Ch Insp Ben Wood said: "This is a devastating incident which has cut short a young man's life and will no doubt cause considerable concern in the local community."

A large police scene remains in place in Watery Street between its junctions with Meadow Street and Montgomery Terrace Road.

Additional patrols would also be carried out in the area, police said.

The image depicts a street that has been cordoned off by police, with three marked police vehicles blocking access. These vehicles feature high-visibility livery and include signage indicating "POLICE" and "CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION". The surrounding area includes residential buildings and trees. The sky is overcast, and the wet road surface suggests that it has recently rained.Image source, BBC/Chloe Aslett
