A 12-year-old child has been arrested in connection with a stabbing in which a teenage boy was left with serious injuries.

Police were called to St Loyes Street in Bedford just before 18:30 BST on Wednesday.

The child was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and the teenager is now in a stable condition in hospital.

A spokesperson for Bedfordshire Police said: "We want to be absolutely clear that there is no excuse for carrying a knife. It does not protect you – it only puts you, those around you and the wider community at greater risk of serious harm."

Additional police patrols have been taking place in the area.
