A football pitch in South Lanarkshire has been wrecked after "mindless" vandals drove a car over it before setting off fireworks.
Images shared on social media by South Lanarkshire Council show heavy tyre tracks over the grass at Hamilton Palace Sports Ground by the site's training equipment.
The seven-a-side pitch will not be in use for an indefinite period as a result.
The local authority has appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture (SLLC) said it was "extremely disappointed at the mindless vandalism".
A spokesperson added: "We understand a car has gone onto the pitch with the purpose of the people in the vehicle then getting out to let off fireworks.
"This has resulted in heavy rutting in a couple of areas and some burn marks.
"It looks like the vehicle got stuck at some point as well, further damaging the pitch."
They warned the "selfish actions" would have a detrimental effect on those who regularly use the pitch.
SLLC also said the damage would also have a financial impact as the pitch cannot be hired out in its present condition.
The spokesperson said: "We are investigating the damage caused and will make the necessary repairs but at this stage it is too early to give timescales."
Police Scotland said inquiries into the incident were ongoing.
