Racers ready as Coracle World Championship returns

More than 160 racers are set to take to the River Severn to compete as the Coracle World Championships returns for another year.
The event will see competitors in circular vessels using a single oar to steer and paddle across the waterway in Shrewsbury.
After several heats, quarter finals, and semi finals, the winners will be crowned world champion at an awards ceremony and celebrations at the nearby The Boathouse pub.
Now in its 17th year, more than £350,000 has been raised for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity.
At least 47 teams are expected to take part from companies and organisations from throughout Shropshire, the West Midlands, and Mid Wales.
Last year, £29,500 was raised after the challenge, which was held between the banks of the river at the Pengwern Boat Club and Quarry Park.
Jayney Davies, chair of the organising committee, said: “Each year, we’re overwhelmed by the support from local people, businesses, and organisations. We hope as many people will again join us as spectators on the river banks."
“The Coracle World Championships are a vital part of our fundraising efforts, ensuring we can continue to offer emotional, financial, medical, and practical assistance,” added John Harrison, relationship fundraising manager for Macmillan.
