A man has been jailed for 38 months after inciting racial hatred online.

Tyler James Kay, 26, previously of Ellfield Court in Northampton, admitted to publishing the inflammatory posts on social media calling for hotels housing asylum seekers to be set alight.

The offence happened during a period of disorder across the country.

The father of three pleaded guilty to the offence at Northampton Magistrates’ Court, and was sentenced by Judge Adrienne Lucking at Northampton Crown Court.

Judge Lucking sentenced Kay to three years and two months in prison.

In court, Kay denied intending to stir up racial hatred, but admitted “in hindsight” some of his posts “made [him] look like an idiot”.

Judge Lucking said she was “completely sure" he knew racial hatred would be "stirred up” after writing “utterly repulsive, racist and shocking posts that have no place in civilised society".

Det Ch Supt Rich Tompkins said: “I hope this case sends a very clear message to people who think they can hide behind a screen and publish hateful, racially prejudiced posts without consequence."
