Man tells jury of wedding day stabbing by in-law

A man has told a court how he was stabbed on his wedding day by his new brother-in-law, who had just run over his own sister and mother, and killed a father-of-two.

Hassan Jhangur, 24, first hit Riasat Khan and then drove into a group of people who had been helping Mr Jhangur’s collapsed sister, Sheffield Crown Court heard.

Mr Jhangur is accused of killing Chris Marriott, 46, in Sheffield in December and injuring four others, before getting out of his car and stabbing Hasan Khan.

Mr Jhangur, of Whiteways Road in Sheffield, denies murder or manslaughter, attempted murder, wounding with intent and causing grievous bodily harm.

Ahead of the trial, he admitted causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Meanwhile, Mr Jhangur's father, Mohammed Jhangur, 56, is accused of perverting the course of justice by allegedly hiding the knife used to stab Hasan Khan.

He denies the charge.

The court heard previously that a fight had erupted between two families at the wedding of Amaani Jhangur and Hasan Khan on the morning of 27 December.

CCTV footage played in court on Monday showed Mr Jhangur leaving home and driving a Seat Ibiza to College Close in Burngreave where his sister's wedding festivities were taking place.

The compilation showed how Riasat Khan was struck by the vehicle before it disappeared out of sight and collided with a group of people further down the street.

Mr Jhangur’s mother Ambreen and his sister Nafeesa suffered life-threatening injuries, while Alison Norris and Riasat Khan suffered injuries to their heads and legs.

Father-of-two Mr Marriott was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Marriott and Ms Norris, a midwife, had both been on a walk with their families and had stopped to help Nafeesa Jhangur who they saw collapsed in the road.

During Monday’s hearing, the jury was also played a 999 call made by Ambreen Jhangur just as the collision took place.

In the audio clip, she can be heard requesting an ambulance for her daughter, who she said was lying unresponsive in the road before the call is interrupted by screaming and shrieks.

Another call, which had been made simultaneously by Riasat Khan, recorded an “escalation in the level of screaming”, the prosecution said, with some people heard shouting “they’ve got knives”.

Tom Storey, prosecuting, told the jury that following the collision, Mr Jhangur got out of the car armed with a knife and attacked Hasan Khan.

Giving evidence, Mr Khan told the court he initially thought Mr Jhangur was going to punch him in the face but was instead stabbed several times.

“He just literally raised his hand and the knife went into my ear. After that all I could see was blood going everywhere,” Mr Khan said.

“He was really trying to push it into my heart.”

Mr Khan said he suffered a punctured lung, fractured jaw and said his hearing had been impaired since the attack.

Richard Thyne KC, defending Hassan Jhangur, suggested Mr Khan was first punched by his client when Mr Khan approached him “aggressively” and armed with a baseball bat.

Mr Thyne told the court Mr Khan had used a baseball bat before during two robberies in September and December in 2020 for which he was convicted.

Mr Khan said he did not remember using a baseball bat in either case.

Mr Khan also denied the suggestions that in the weeks leading up to the wedding his wife’s sisters had accused him of being controlling towards her, tracking her phone or not letting her see friends and family.

He also denied that his way of treating her had been one of the reasons why there had been a fallout between the families on the day of the wedding.
