People living near a landfill site have said they keep their windows closed every day, because of smells.

The Environment Agency said it is talking to the operators of the Granville site on Grange Lane in Telford, Shropshire, after receiving complaints.

The councillor for the area, Nigel Dugmore, said it was important to confirm if the landfill site was the cause of the smell and if there were any health implications.

The Potter Group, which runs the site, has been approached for comment.

Tom Woodhall, who lives nearby said he had noticed the smell since moving into his new-build home in November 2022.

"The smell in general is vile, it's worse in the summer," he said.

He said it smelt like rotten eggs and added: "Every hot day you get you really get a good whiff of it."

He is one of a number of people to have reported it to the Environment Agency.

Harry Yau lives on another new housing estate near the landfill site and moved to the area in September.

He said: "I just keep the windows closed during the day" and that his family would ask him "where's the smell from?"

Mr Dugmore, who sits as a Conservative on Telford and Wrekin Council, said: "I think we need to be a bit careful that we don't jump to too many conclusions.

"The tip is going to be the most likely source of it, but why now?"

The landfill site closed as a household recycling centre in 2016, but is licensed to operate privately until 2030.

Mr Dugmore said he wanted to know if something at the site had changed recently.

"I've lived in the area for well over 20 years and we've never seen anything like this," he said.
