Kevin Bodle, 49, was driving on the A75 near Glenluce at about 06:45 on Tuesday.
Mr Bodle was taken to the Galloway Community Hospital in Stranraer where he was pronounced dead.
The crash - involving a white Peugeot Partner and a Volvo paver machine - closed the road in the area for several hours.
Police said inquiries into the full circumstances were ongoing.
Sgt Lloyd Caven said: "Our thoughts remain with Kevin’s family and friends at this terrible time, as they try to come to terms with their loss."
He appealed for anyone with information about the crash, external or who might have dashcam footage to come forward.
