A century-old FA Cup winner's medal has sold at auction in a lot for more than £10,000.

Newcastle United goalkeeper William Bradley was awarded the medal at Wembley Stadium on 26 April 1924, following the team's 2-0 victory against Aston Villa.

It was sold in a Newcastle auction by Mr Bradley's grandson, also called William Bradley, who said: "I feel pleased to share it with the world."

The lot was won by a buyer who said the medal would be put on display at a public home, auctioneers Anderson & Garland said.

The prize, alongside an inscribed pocket watch and other memorabilia including the match day programme, was sold for £10,140 on Thursday.

Mr Bradley said: "My grandfather passed away before I had the chance to meet him, but his legend as a cup hero and local celebrity was a constant presence in my upbringing."

He also said his father had told him about how football had largely spared the elder Mr Bradley from World War One.

The army utilised him for morale-boosting exhibition matches, he said.

"[It] adds another layer of complexity to his story," he said.

Newcastle have won the FA Cup six times, the last time being 1955.

Mr Bradley made more than 130 appearances for the club.
