Tackling the cost of living crisis and improving the NHS should be the priorities for the Labour government, according to Lincoln's new MP.

Hamish Falconer has been speaking in the first week of his new job at Westminster.

Having taken his seat on the packed Labour benches in the House of Commons, Mr Falconer said it was his intention to deliver for the people of LIncoln.

“I heard so many times across the campaign just how much people were struggling. How much bills were pressing on them, or the waiting times at the hospital," he added.

"Those are the not the sorts of things you can wave a magic wand and change in days, but those are the kind of issues that I am focused on."

Future minister?

Mr Falconer is no stranger to the workings of government. He leaves behind a career as a diplomat in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and his father Charlie Falconer was Lord Chancellor in Tony Blair’s Labour government.

Given his political pedigree, some commentators have predicted a ministerial career for Falconer junior – so is he ambitious?

“Honestly, it's very flattering that people say these things,“ he said. However, he added: “Lincoln is my focus and I need start delivering for my city."

Mr Falconer was elected with a majority of 8,793 over the previous Conservative MP, Karl McCartney.

The last Labour MP to represent the city was Karen Lee, from 2017 to 2019.

Between 1997 and 2010, Gillian Merron was the Labour MP for Lincoln and held a number of ministerial roles.

Baroness Merron has returned to Sir Keir Starmer's government as parliamentary under-secretary of state in the Department of Health and Social Care.
