Council sells historic properties to balance books

A Surrey council will be auctioning "historic" properties in a town centre to help its financial recovery plan.
Guildford Borough Council will be selling properties on Castle Street and Quarry Street in Guildford.
The buildings were most recently used as a restaurant, a photography studio, and a recreated Victorian classroom.
Richard Lucas, lead councillor for finance and property, called the auction a "rare opportunity" to buy buildings "full of character and historical significance" in the town.
Mr Lucas said the decision to sell these properties was taken as part of a routine asset review.
"Income generated will help towards our financial recovery plan," he added.
Savills will be holding the auction on 16 April.
