Five candidates have been selected for the upcoming Madeley and Betley by-election.

It comes after the resignation of councillors, Gary White and his husband Simon, who served on Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council for 12 and eight years respectively.

Including the two vacancies, the council is made up of 23 Conservative councillors, 18 Labour councillors and one independent.

The election is set to take place on 4 July, the same day as the general election.

The ex-Conservative councillors' decision to step down follows the couple's relocation to Market Drayton, Shropshire.

In 2022, when the ward was last contested they received more than 50% of the votes cast.

The full list of candidates are:

Mandy Berrisford – Conservative Party Candidate

Tony Kearon – Labour Party Candidate

Tanya Morgan – Independent

Claire Annette Radford – Labour Party Candidate

Jill Whitmore – Conservative Party Candidate
