A road closure due to a water leak in Surrey has prompted a 29 mile (47km) road diversion.

SES Water has apologised to motorists after a section of the A22 at Blindley Heath, Lingfield, was shut overnight.

The water company said the work was "essential" to safeguard water supplies for customers.

The closure is expected to remain in place for a minimum of two weeks while repairs take place.

It said the diversion route was required "to ensure the safety of motorists during the repair process".

It added: "We're sorry for the disruption caused and will be working extended hours to re-open the road as soon as possible."

The diversion route includes parts of the A22, A25, A2011 and the A264, as well as part of the A217 near Gatwick Airport.
