Stop smoking service expands
- Published
A service that helps people in Telford and Wrekin to quit smoking is to expand, after the council said the habit remained a "significant public health issue".
Run by Telford and Wrekin Council, Stop Smoking will now offer more appointments with professionals who will help people give up.
There will also be more in-person clinics in the community, to give residents more opportunities to get help close to home.
It also launched a new campaign, titled Crush the Habit, which encourages people to give up smoking for both themselves and the wellbeing of their loved ones.
The scheme aims to motivate smokers to quit by highlighting the positive effects that their decision could have on family members and friends, as well as the community.
It includes personal success stories and motivational messages, free access to the Stop Smoking appointments, and support from experts.
Experts will delve into smokers' motivations and smoking habits, and help set a "quit date", as well as offer nicotine replacement therapy.
"We understand that quitting smoking can be challenging, but with the right support and motivation, it is possible," said councillor Kelly Middleton, cabinet member for healthier, safer and stronger communities.
She is an ex-smoker herself, who stopped in 2022 after smoking for 35 years.
"The Healthy Lifestyles team are reassuring and supportive for anyone looking to crush the habit," she said.
"As well as the free appointments on offer, you become part of the wider Healthy Telford community where you can speak to people going through similar experiences and work together to become healthier."
