A man and a woman have died after the car they were travelling in collided with a tree in a cemetery.

Officers were called just before 05:00 GMT to Birks Fold, which runs through Scholemoor Cemetery in Bradford, after members of the public raised the alarm, according to West Yorkshire Police.

Two people were found inside a silver hatchback car on the section of the road which runs past Lidget Green Primary School into the graveyard.

An investigation by the Major Collision Enquiry Team was under way and officers were appealing for witnesses, or anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage, to get in touch, a force spokesperson said.

A cordon was set up across the entrances to the cemetery as investigations continued.

The damaged vehicle was taken away on a recovery truck just before midday on Thursday.

The cemetery was temporarily closed as a result of the incident, with services due to be held there cancelled.
