A man who smashed a Nationwide Building Society's windows with a hammer has been jailed for 19 months.

Darren Wyer, 43, of no fixed abode, was found sat on a bench after reports there was a man with a hammer in Long Causeway, Peterborough, on 13 October.

CCTV revealed he hit the building society's windows twice with a hammer, cracking them, before he returned 30 minutes later to hit the windows three more times.

Wyer was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court on 9 December after admitting threatening and abusive behaviour, common assault, destroying or damaging property and breaching a suspended sentence.

Police said it was not the first time they had been called to incidents involving Wyer that weekend.

On 12 October, he threw a duffel bag at his brother's van windscreen and hit the driver's window with a hammer.

He also threw a lit cigarette at his brother and shouted abuse while throwing the hammer at his brother's house.

Wyer, the court heard, had also previously intimidated his mother by sending abusive emails and texts.

PC Danielle Hunt said: "Wyer had been given a second chance by the courts through an earlier suspended sentence for possession of an offensive weapon and criminal damage, which he completely disregarded with his recent actions.

"His continual aggression and harassment of his family has impacted upon their lives as well as his."
