A section of the A27 that had been closed due to a car fire and fuel spill has reopened.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said it was called to the A27 Chichester Bypass after a car fire had closed the road in both directions between the B2145 and the A259 shortly after 09:00 BST on Tuesday.

The westbound carriageway reopened by midday and the eastbound road was closed until about 17:40, National Highways said.

The fire service said two engines attended the scene and the blaze had been extinguished.

Emergency works were expected to take place overnight from 20:00 under an already-planned lane closure, National Highways added.

South East Coast Ambulance Service has been contacted for more information.
