Two of the eight cats let out of a rescue centre during a break-in have returned.

Compassion for Cats in Oakhill, near Shepton Mallet, in Somerset, was broken into on Monday.

Judy Knowles, 71, who runs the centre, said six cats were still missing after the doors were left open and they escaped.

However, some have been spotted near the centre by neighbours.

"Jeff turned up this morning, he had a very traumatic life before he came to us," Ms Knowles said.

"We thought we'd never see him again so it's amazing he's so comfortable here that he has come back."

She added that Gill has also returned but they are still looking for Biscuit, Jasper and Elsa.

Neighbours had been in touch with sightings of some of the other missing cats, and Ms Knowles said there is still hope of finding them.

"The day it happened I didn't like people at all, but since then so many people have rung me with donations, it's unbelievable how many people have cared about these cats," she said.

"A local firm is donating cameras so we can put in CCTV.

"I am overwhelmed by how many people have got hold of us."
