Alderman McCaughey will hold the role until until the next annual general meeting of the council, currently scheduled for June.

Following his appointment, he said that he was looking forward "to working along with the deputy mayor, elected members, council officers and the citizens of our borough".

He also paid tribute to his predecessor, describing her has a "beacon of strength and dedication for so many years".

"She tirelessly worked for her community, offering guidance, assistance, and counsel," he added.
