School backpacks donated to children at refuge

Backpacks filled with back-to-school essentials have been donated to children affected by domestic abuse.

A total of 70 bags, which include items such as water bottles, stationery and school uniform, were given to children and mothers being supported by The Haven Wolverhampton.

The items were donated by individuals and local organisations as part of the refuge's Back To School appeal, which aims to relieve financial pressure and ensure families in its care have essentials for school.

One mother, Sarah, which is not her real name, said the backpack was exactly what her daughter needed.

A 19-year-old woman, who is studying at college, also received a bag and said she was overwhelmed by the support.

Upon receiving a backpack, another 15-year-old girl told the charity: "Perfect, I needed a new bag."

The Haven said many women and children came into their accommodation with "nothing more than the clothes on their back".

According to the charity, research shows as many as 95% of victims and survivors of domestic abuse are also subjected to financial and economic abuse and left with little or no access to money or necessities.

Donations have come from organisations including Fairway Healthcare, Embark Learning and Midland Metro Alliance.

Anna Pendlebury, from The Haven, said many children arrived at their accommodation having had their lives "turned completely upside down", as fleeing abuse often meant leaving their homes and schools behind.

"Providing children with a backpack and school essentials not only gives them the items to support their learning, but also the dignity and pride that every child deserves," she added.

"We are truly thankful to our donors for making such a huge impact on the children's first day of school."
