Jersey's government wants to create new powers to ensure the safety and security of the island's gas network.

The Home Affairs Minister Mary Le Hegarat said that following explosions at Haut du Mont and Mont Pinel, and a gas outage in recent years, she wants to change the law to give the government more robust powers.

These would include forcing the gas supplier to notify the minister about events that threaten, or potentially threaten, public safety or the gas supply.

If approved, the change would also give officials rights to enter certain premises, seize documents and demand information.
