An ambulance repair workshop is to be built on the site of a former carpet shop.

North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust (NWAS) is to create the garage at the former AA Carpets building on Chapel Road in Workington, Cumbria.

NWAS purchased the building in March 2024 after it outgrew its existing facility.

In its planning application, GSS Architecture said the new workshop would "bring efficient and reliable services to the local community".

"The redevelopment of the Workington Ambulance Station for NWAS aims to improve ambulance maintenance workshops, offer MOT services, and accommodate associated offices," it added.

The blue building will be repainted to mid-grey to align with NWAS's branding.

Internal ceilings and partition walls that are no longer required will be removed, while a new roller shutter door on the east side of the building will be installed as a vehicle entrance.

An ambulance parking area will be built at the site, which will include two electric charging stations for the vehicles to use.

CCTV cameras and a 2.4m (7ft 10in) fence will be installed for security.

Planning permission for the change of use was granted by Cumberland Council on Friday.
