A serving police officer sexually assaulted a child under 13, a court has heard.

John Stringer, 42, from Cardiff, denies five charges relating to the sexual abuse of a child.

Cardiff Crown Court heard Mr Stringer, who works for Gwent Police, was arrested after the girl spoke to a teaching assistant at her school.

Ian Wright, prosecuting, told the jury the girl said Mr Stringer "would touch her in a sexual way".

He added she claimed Mr Stringer would "show her videos of half naked girls" and "cause her to mimic what the females were doing in the video".

Mr Wright said the girl’s parents were called to the school and the police were contacted.

Mr Stringer was arrested later that day.

The court heard the girl gave a pre-recorded interview to police in the following days.

In that she said the girl Mr Stringer insisted she did what he told her, despite her reluctance.

The court heard the girl claimed he said it would be “her fault” if her parents found out what had been happening and got him into trouble.

Mr Stringer pleaded not guilty to two counts of sexual assault, two of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and one of causing a child to watch a sexual act.
