Firefighters were called to rescue a man who got stuck up a tree he had climbed in an attempt to rescue his pet parrot.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to Manor Field Play Park, off Uppingham Road in Thurnby, at about 09:20 BST on Thursday after the bird flew up into high branches.

"The owner climbed up to rescue their pet parrot, which was stuck in the tree and needed help to get down," a fire service spokesperson said.

Crews used an aerial ladder to reach the man and Uppingham Road was closed until 11:00 as the rescue was carried out.
