Two swans have died after being shot with a pellet gun in Chesterfield.

Derbyshire Police's rural crime team said the swans were killed at Blue Bank Lock between 17:00 GMT on Friday and 09:00 on Saturday.

Officers said one of the swans was shot in the head with a .177 pellet while the other suffered a similar injury to the eye.

A force spokesperson said officers were "determined to identify those responsible" for the injuries, which would have been "horrific and painful".
