A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said officers were called to a report that a 20-year-old man had been seriously assaulted on Hunts Pond Road in Park Gate, near Southampton, just after 18:00 GMT on Saturday.

The victim, who suffered "serious, possibly life-threatening injuries", remained in hospital in a stable condition, said the force.

The arrested man, from Fareham, was in police custody, it added.

Ch Insp Marcus Kennedy said: "We understand that this incident will have caused significant concern in the community and we want to reassure you that we believe this to be an isolated incident."

An investigation into the full circumstances was under way and Hunts Pond Road remained closed on Sunday while officers carried out enquiries, he added.
