Police have reminded motorists to "behave responsibly" after some drivers attempted to reverse away from a multi-vehicle crash on a motorway.
The southbound carriageway of the M11 was closed at about 01:00 GMT between junctions six and five in Essex.
Essex Police said seven vehicles were involved in the incident and a "number of people were taken to hospital" for further assessment.
The force has reminded drivers to "follow the rules of the road" after some attempted to reverse along the hard shoulder to avoid the closure.
A statement said: "While we understand people's frustrations when they are faced with a delay in their journey, it is vital that people behave responsibly and follow the rules of the road."
The road remained closed until about 04:00 GMT when emergency services left the scene.
Essex Police have appealed for anybody with dashcam footage in relation to the incident to contact them.
