A research team is spearheading a new project to tackle the issue of knife crime among young people in Wolverhampton.
The University of Wolverhampton pilot study, led by Dr Mahuya Kanjilal, aims to explore young people's knowledge, understanding, and views on knife crime in the city.
Working in collaboration with The Way Youth Zone, a charity providing a safe and supportive environment for young people, the project seeks to bring together expertise from across disciplines.
Dr Opinderjit Takhar, acting as an advisor to the project, said: "This is an essential piece of work at both regional and national levels."
She added: "We are working closely with politicians, schools, and community organisations to tackle the growing problem of knife crime and supporting parents who have lost children to this tragedy."
The research team also includes Dr Antigonos Sohos, a reader in applied psychology, and David Martin, a postgraduate researcher and demonstrator in psychology.
According to the university, the project adopts a peer research approach, aiming to empower young people to take an active role in discussing and investigating the topic.
The research seeks to answer three key questions:
What do young people know about knife crime?
Why do young people get involved in it?
What can be done to stop or reduce knife crime in Wolverhampton?
Findings are expected by the end of the year and will inform local strategies, community initiatives, and policy development aimed at reducing knife crime and supporting young people.
Dr Kanjilal said: "This project is about listening to young people and giving them the opportunity to share their perspectives.
"By working with The Way Youth Zone, we're ensuring the research reflects real experiences of those most affected."
