Events will shed more light on nuclear site plan

A series of events are being held to help people learn more about a waste facility proposal.

The former Theddlethorpe gas terminal in Lincolnshire is one of three sites being considered by the government as an underground nuclear waste site.

Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) posted leaflets detailing events at The Dunes Theatre in Mablethorpe on 19, 20 and 21 October, where the public can learn why the site is being considered as a geological disposal facility and what it could mean for the area.

Local councillors have called for a referendum on the development with opposition voiced from worried residents.

The events will include an exhibition space with interactive models, films, audio guides and displays relating to the proposed facility.

If approved, the waste disposal site would see nuclear waste from power stations stored under up to 1,000m (3,280ft) of solid rock until its radioactivity had naturally decayed.

Theddlethorpe Geological Disposal Facility Community Partnership said technical specialists will also be at the events to speak to residents and help answer questions.

Martin Hill, leader of Lincolnshire County Council, previously said the plans, which were revealed in 2021, had been under discussion for "a number of years already".

He added that a vote by 2027 would "give ample time for people to have formed an opinion".

Earlier this year, the community partnership group selected 16 projects for £1m funding as part of the engagement process.
