As panto season got under way, cries of "It's behind you" could be heard in Barnsley - but they were directed at motorists rather than stage performers.

A sign on Dodworth Road advising on available spaces in the borough's car parks was originally installed facing outbound traffic, so drivers heading into town would not have seen it without looking backwards.

The error was flagged up on social media by the Dodworth Liberal Democrats group.

A few hours later, in a post on its own Facebook account, Labour-controlled Barnsley Council said it was a "mistake from our external contractors" and was being rectified.

Lib Dem councillor Will Fielding, who initially raised the problem, said: "I'm grateful that they managed to turn it round quite quickly... it is rather embarrassing for the council to have to go back and fix what should have been an easy job."

Barnsley Council said that the sign had to be installed on the outbound side of the road due to the "position of the electrical supply", but that it was meant to face inbound traffic.

A split picture - the right-hand side shows a white sign on a road with two blue capital letter P's for parking and a list of car park names underneath.
The left-hand side of the picture says in white lettering on a purple background:
"Whoops! You've probably noticed the new car parking sign is facing the wrong way, a mistake from our external contractors. We've let them know and someone is on their way to fix it."Image source, Barnsley Council
