Four nights of evening and overnight road closures are planned outside a town centre bus station for regeneration works.

Murray Road, off Oxford Street in Workington, Cumbria, will be closed between 18:00 to 06:00 GMT from Monday.

Temporary bus stops would be in place outside the bus station during the working hours, which were subject to weather and site conditions, Cumberland Council said.

The work is part of a wider £33m government-funded regeneration project in the town, which will include a new logistics and energy hub at the Port of Workington and a new sports village.

General parking bays will be suspended during the works and a signed diversion route will be in place.

Access to Murray Road would be for deliveries only, and only by arrangement with staff on site, the Labour-led council said.

Work has already been taking place in the area in previous months in hopes to reconfigure the junction to give easier access to buses.

The street is undergoing works. Red barriers are erected around ground that is half exposed and half concreted over. There are work vehicles parked up behing the barriers. In the background is the red-brick bus building with a sign on it reading: "Stagecoach".Image source, Google

The council said it expected that, by the end of the week, works on Murray Road would have reached a stage where pedestrian diversions and construction materials could be removed.

The local authority said it would allow the area to "fully reopen to the public".

"Landscaping will also progress within this timeframe, although some elements may be subject to seasonal installation," the council added.
