Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was found in Barnstaple with head injuries he said had been caused after being hit with a baseball bat.

The 54-year-old man was found unconscious behind Queen Anne's café on the Strand at about 08:30 BST on Friday, Devon and Cornwall Police said.

The man told officers he had been hit with a baseball bat late on Thursday night or early on Friday morning by a man in his 30s with a skinny build who was with a woman with ginger hair.

The man was taken to hospital and later discharged, the police added.

Det Sgt Ben Cartwright said: “As part of the ongoing investigation, we are conducting witness and CCTV inquiries.

“We are appealing for anyone who may have seen an assault overnight on the Strand involving a weapon or the parties described or can recall seeing a man lying injured or unconscious behind Queen Anne’s café over the night of Thursday 1 August into Friday 2 August.”

He asked that anyone with information about the incident contact Devon and Cornwall Police.
