Bin collections were cancelled after an Essex council had its operator's licence revoked, leaving residents in limbo.

Uttlesford District Council said refuse, garden and trade waste could not be collected due to an "administrative issue" on Wednesday.

The problem meant its operator's licence, which is a legal requirement, was taken away.

"We are doing everything we can to ensure our vehicles get back out on the road," a council spokesperson said.

'Sincerely apologise'

The local authority said it was working with the Office of the Traffic Commissioner to rectify the situation and would provide an update on Thursday.

It added there had been no incident with the safety of its vehicles or their operation.

Residents would be informed about when council staff would catch up with their missed collections in due course, the council spokesperson said.

"Once again, we would like to sincerely apologise for this situation," they added.

"We do appreciate residents and businesses rely on our bin collection services and we are doing everything we can to ensure our vehicles get back out on the road as soon as possible."
