A council has announced a recruitment drive as part of government initiative to standardise waste collections across the country.

The Simpler Recycling scheme, which is due to come into effect for all households in England from 31 March 2026, aims to end the "muddled and confusing" approach by different local authorities to bin collections.

A spokesperson for Hull City Council it was currently advertising 70 new roles in waste management to meet the new national regulations, which include a weekly food waste collection.

Councillor Charles Quinn, portfolio holder for environment, said the scheme "marks a significant step forward in how we manage waste across the city".

In preparation for the changes, the council said it was currently advertising 70 new roles in waste management, including 60 loader positions and 10 driver chargehand roles.

The loader positions are advertised with a salary up to £26,403 and duties include contributing to 1,500 bin collections per crew, per day.

The driver roles have a potential pay of up to £32,061 and involve directing the waste collection team as well as operating the bin lorry.

It is holding a recruitment event on Saturday for potential employees to meet some of the staff within the waste and recycling team, and learn more about the roles available.

Quinn added: "I encourage anyone interested to come along and find out more about joining our dedicated waste team."

The event is being held at Staveley House, on Stockholm Road, between 10:00 and 13:00 BST.
