Hot weather guidance has been issued by the governments in the Channel Islands after forecasters said temperatures could exceed 30C (86F).

Prof Peter Bradley, Jersey's director of public health, urged islanders to stay cool during the spell of hot weather which had been forecast for the next few days.

He said temperatures could exceed 30C on Saturday and people planning to attend weekend events should take precautions to stay safe.

Guernsey's Public Health Services also issued advice to people to "stay safe, cool, and well" during the hot weather.

'Health risks'

Advice offered from both governments included wearing a hat, drinking plenty of water and staying out of the sun between midday and 18:00 when the sun is at its hottest.

Prof Bradley said: "While we welcome the warm weather, extreme heat can cause harm to health including heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and dehydration.

"There are a number of events happening this weekend and I encourage all islanders attending, to take precautions and stay safe in the hot weather."

People have also been asked to check in on those who might be at risk of health issues from the heat, such as the elderly to make sure they are keeping cool.

A spokesperson for Guernsey's Public Health Services said: "Many of us enjoy spending time outdoors in the sunshine, but hot weather can pose health risks, especially for certain groups, such as young children, older adults, and people with long-term health conditions."
