Business relocates after emergency pier closure

Businesses were given a 12 hours’ notice of the closure on Wednesday

A business based on a West Sussex pier has temporarily relocated away from the site after the attraction had to close suddenly.

A routine inspection by engineers found that one of the supports on the underside of Worthing Pier had suffered what is believed to be storm damage.

Businesses were given a 12 hours’ notice of the closure.

Worthing Borough Council said: “Although the closure is frustrating, keeping everyone safe has to come first.”

The Tern restaurant, which was located on the pier, has temporarily moved to Littlehampton.

The owner of the restaurant, Johnny Stanford, said: "On Wednesday night we were plunged into a disaster of a situation and repeated requests have still been refused - even limited controlled access to our space to get hold of any of our equipment, crockery, produce or prep.

"Although the decision to move slightly further up the road may come as a surprise to some, we trust that when you see this remarkable [new] venue, you will understand why this is the right decision for us."

Watercraft including boats and paddleboards have also been prohibited from going under the pier until the work is carried out.

It is the first time in more than 25 years that such an event has happened, Worthing council said.

“The council is grateful for everyone’s patience while the repairs take place, in particular the pier businesses and their staff,” a spokesperson said.

Repair works are set to begin on 15 October and are expected to take several days depending on weather conditions, the council added.
