A police watchdog has been asked to investigate a fatal car fire in the Highlands.

A driver died after their car crashed and caught fire near Daviot, south of Inverness, on Wednesday.

Police Scotland said the vehicle left the B851 at about 11:20. The road around the site was closed for almost 30 hours to allow for an investigation.

Armed response vehicles were in attendance. Police have not said in what capacity, but did say there was not a pursuit and no firearms were discharged.

A police spokesperson said: "Inquiries remain ongoing.

"The circumstances have been referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC)."

A spokesperson for PIRC said: "We have received and are currently assessing a referral from Police Scotland in relation to an incident on the B851 near Daviot."

The crash site is near Littlemill, a popular walking area.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it mobilised three appliances at 11:24.

PIRC was set up in 2013, when the country's eight forces were brought together to form Police Scotland.

It investigates complaints by members of the public against the force and can also review the way policing bodies in Scotland handle complaints made about them by members of the public.
